I've always been attracted to philosopy. I love reading philosphical texts, discuss philosophical questions about our existence, and think about the philosphy behind all things. It is only natural that my love for philosophy would transcend into my artwork.

This piece symbolizes the two ethical codes that govern our lives- deontological and consequential. Deontology suggests that our actions are either good or bad according to a clear set of rules. An action that obeys that set of rules is ethical. An action that does not obey that set of rules is unethical. This theory is represented in the piece in the form of the simple black and white shades at the extremities of the painting.

Consequentialism theory claims that an action is deemed good or bad depending on the outcome of said action. If the outcome of the action is good therefore, the action must be good. This theory leaves more room for grey area. It is not simply black or white which is why it is represented in the painting as the different shades of grey in the middle.

Most people live by both moral codes, bouncing from one to the other without even realizing it. I think that it is quite interesting how we are able to do that and I wanted to create something that captures this unconscious process.
