I am always looking for new ways to express myself in the context of abstract art. So when I came across the idea of using masking tape to create negative spaces in my canvas, I was eager to try.
I went in with the idea of creating different "frames" and these said frames to me, represent the the different frames of mind that we adopt. I wanted to symbolize, in an abstract manner, the ways human beings compartmentalize their experiences. In order to make sense of our life and the things that happen to us, positive or negative, we need to create compartments in our brain. When we create compartments, it makes it easier for us to live with what happens because, let's face it, sometimes there are just no real answers. So, we create these organized sections in our brains to help us keep going. However, if you look closely at the painting, some black paint leaked through the neat and rigid line that was created by the masking tape. Maybe we need to come to terms with the idea that perhaps, no matter how much we try to strive for perfection, convince ourselves of control, or run away from certain thoughts, there will always be a little spill that we forgot to clean up.
